Priorities
In our rapidly advancing digital age, cities across the globe are embracing cutting-edge technologies to elevate the quality of life, enhance public services, and address modern-day challenges. As we continue on this transformative journey, we have identified five key areas of focus that will shape our strategic initiatives. These priorities reflect our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and ensuring that our urban infrastructure meets the demands of the future.
5G
The Next Frontier in Connectivity: 5G represents a technology that enables city systems in different areas to respond faster, work more efficiently and provide new solutions, bringing tangible benefits to our citizens. That is why Riga has launched a state-supported initiative to develop its own Cityverse with focus on developing new AR/VR solutions, AI-driven services, real-time data analytics across the city and innovations in autonomously controlled transport, including drones, thus benefiting local communities in areas such as: education, improved public safety and introduction of new urban mobility solutions.
Data solutions and IoT
Interconnected Devices, Smarter Living: The Internet of Things (IoT) opens the opportunity of the possibility to monitor, analyze, and respond to city needs in real-time. Rīga is actively working to facilitate the use of IoT to ensure the development of smart infrastructure that could make city more livable and accessible for its inhabitants. This includes, but not only, the use of various sensors for air quality and noise pollution monitoring, the development of digital twins, as well as real-time data-based mobility platforms.
Energy and Climate
Sustainability at the Heart of Progress: Sustainability and the principles of sustainable development have always been important to the Rīga City Council. The city development planning is already based on it, and work on the implementation of the UN’s sustainable development goals is also ongoing. Rīga is also one of the cities participating in the EU Mission for 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. To achieve this ambitious goal Rīga is facilitating challenge-driven innovations. The smart city’s focus is on sustainable mobility, green energy, data driven and nature-based solutions.
Mobility
Redesigning Movement for the Modern Age: Mobility makes the greater part of the congestion in the city, therefore it is important for Rīga to focus on developing efficient, safe and sustainable means of transport. With the help of technologies Rīga plans to develop smart transport systems and infrastructure, facilitate the habit change towards more environment friendly options, ensuring seamless movement for all.
