Riga launches pilot project “Artificial Intelligence Classroom Assistant”

,

The Riga Municipality Education, Culture and Sports Department, in cooperation with the technology company Tilde, is launching the pilot project “Artificial Intelligence Classroom Assistant”. The project will be implemented in two Riga schools – Riga 75th Primary School and Riga 1st Primary School – Development Centre.

“Tilde” is a European leader in AI-powered language technologies, with long-standing experience in developing speech recognition and machine translation solutions that are increasingly being applied in the field of education.

The aim of the pilot project is to develop an inclusive, personalised and digitally supported learning process, while strengthening education quality management.

“Such collaborations are crucial to ensure that the opportunities provided by modern technologies reach both students and teachers. By combining the municipality’s experience with the innovation expertise of technology companies, it is possible to create a higher-quality and more accessible learning environment,” emphasizes Ivars Balamovskis, Director of the Riga Municipality Education, Culture and Sports Department.

The new solution will provide real-time transcription of teachers’ speech during lessons, as well as lesson summaries and the preparation of review questions. This will help students better understand and revise learning content, particularly supporting children with different learning needs.

“Artificial intelligence language technologies make learning content more accessible to every student. They help overcome barriers caused by language, perception and learning difficulties. For Tilde, this pilot project is an important step towards making artificial intelligence in schools a safe and practical tool that supports both teachers and students while strengthening inclusive education,” says Kaspars Kauliņš, author of the project idea.

The pilot project will be implemented in three phases and will continue until the end of 2026.

This initiative demonstrates the importance of purposeful cooperation between municipalities and technology companies in introducing the opportunities provided by modern technologies into education and developing a learning environment that is adaptable and inclusive.
