ExPEDite: Enabling Positive Energy Districts through a Planning and Management Digital Twin

ExPEDite project develops and implements a new digital platform – a digital twin – that enables real-time monitoring, visualization, and management of energy flows at the urban district level. It helps plan energy production and consumption more efficiently, improve building energy performance, and adapt mobility solutions.

The Significance of the Project for Riga

Riga faces challenges in energy management and sustainable urban planning. Efficient energy management solutions help reduce consumption and support the transition to a climate-neutral city. ExPEDite provides the municipality and experts with data-driven simulation tools to design more effective and environmentally friendly development strategies.

Target of the Project

To create an innovative digital twin for energy and urban planning, helping cities improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and make data-informed decisions for sustainable development.

Benefits for Residents

✔ More efficient energy management that helps reduce consumption and costs;
✔ Better planning of climate and energy projects, improving urban sustainability;
✔ Improved urban mobility and transport planning with greener solutions;
✔ Public engagement through gamification and co-creation to raise awareness about energy efficiency.

Project Activities

✔ Development and testing of a digital twin;
✔ Data collection and analysis on energy production, consumption, and transport impacts;
✔ Simulation of energy efficiency and climate scenarios with related recommendations;
✔ Preparation of guidelines for scaling the digital twin to other neighbourhoods in Riga.

Testbed Territory in Riga

Ķīpsala living lab – the digital twin is being tested and developed for several buildings in the RTU student campus.

Project Results

✔ A digital twin has been developed as a tool for improving energy and urban planning;
✔ Regulatory requirements for the digital twin have been drafted to support wider adoption in other Riga districts or municipalities;
✔ Enhanced data and analytical methods for sustainable energy management.
