Detection of Cargo Vehicle Tire Overload and Overheating Using Video Analytics

The project developed a mobile video analytics solution for detecting tire overload and overheating in cargo vehicles, replacing the less efficient “weigh-in-motion” technology.

The Significance of the Project for Riga

Cargo vehicles exceeding permissible axle loads cause significant damage to the city’s road surfaces, bridges, and overpasses, while also contributing to increased noise and air pollution. Traditional weigh-in-motion systems are expensive and limited by installation requirements. Therefore, Riga required a more flexible and cost-effective solution that could be installed on existing infrastructure—such as traffic light poles, streetlights, electrical cabinets, or vehicles—without damaging the road surface.

Target of the Project

To provide an efficient and low-cost method for detecting cargo vehicle tire overload and overheating using video analytics technology.

Benefits for Residents

✔ Reduced road and bridge damage, improving infrastructure durability
✔ Lower noise and air pollution through prevention of overloading violations

Project Activities

✔ Installation of video and thermal cameras
✔ System programming and configuration
✔ Functional testing of the solution
✔ Development of a user interface environment

Implementation Area

Imanta district

Project Results

✔ A functional system implemented for detecting overloaded and overheated cargo vehicles
✔ Enabled rapid identification of vehicles for further inspection and enforcement

The project continues in 2024 under the title Detection of Cargo Vehicle Tire Overload and Overheating Using Online Video Analytics.”
