Implementation of an IoT Wheelchair Lift Monitoring System in Riga City Municipality

The project introduced an Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring system for wheelchair lifts across Riga City Municipality. The system enables remote monitoring and data analysis of lift operations, allowing timely maintenance, increased user safety, and optimized maintenance costs.

The Significance of the Project for Riga

Before the project’s implementation, lift maintenance was carried out twice a year according to a fixed schedule, regardless of usage frequency, which led to unnecessary expenses. Additionally, more than half of the lifts were over 10 years old, increasing the likelihood of breakdowns and repair costs. The IoT solution allows real-time monitoring of lift conditions, early detection of malfunctions, adjustment of maintenance schedules based on actual usage, and ensures safe, uninterrupted service for people with mobility impairments.

Target of the Project

To implement a pilot project that provides smart monitoring for 100 municipal wheelchair lifts, enhancing safety, reducing maintenance costs, and enabling data-driven service management.

Benefits for Residents

✔ Safer and more reliable access to public buildings for people with mobility impairments
✔ Fewer unplanned outages, ensuring smoother daily mobility for residents
✔ Faster response to technical issues, reducing downtime and improving accessibility for all city residents

Project Activities

✔ Preparation of technical specifications and market research
✔ Procurement, installation, and system integration of IoT sensors
✔ User information and maintenance schedule planning
✔ Continuous lift monitoring and data analysis
✔ Evaluation of system efficiency and service impact assessment
