Riga has received the prestigious European Mobility Week Award 2025, granted for outstanding achievements in promoting sustainable urban mobility. The award was presented in March 2026 at a ceremony organised by the European Commission in Brussels, recognising Riga’s innovative and citizen-engaging approach to mobility.

European Mobility Week is an important initiative in which thousands of cities participate each year, promoting the transition to cleaner, safer and smarter modes of transport. It provides cities with the opportunity to test new solutions, engage the public and create a more sustainable urban environment.

Innovative and inclusive approach to mobility

Riga was highly praised for a creative and inclusive programme that encourages changes in residents’ habits and promotes sustainable modes of transport. The city successfully engaged various groups in society – residents, businesses and organisations creating a shared understanding of the importance of mobility in the urban environment.

During the campaign, a wide range of activities were implemented – from educational events and challenges to practical solutions that promote cycling, walking and the use of public transport. This approach not only helps to improve mobility but also contributes to creating a healthier and more accessible urban environment for everyone.

Long-term benefits for the city

In addition to activities carried out during European Mobility Week, Riga is also implementing long-term solutions that strengthen sustainable mobility. These include the development of new cycling infrastructure, improvements in traffic safety and initiatives that encourage active mobility in everyday life. These measures help reduce transport-related pollution, improve air quality and make the city more resident-friendly. At the same time, they also raise public awareness of the importance of sustainable mobility and encourage the choice of more environmentally friendly modes of transport.

Recognition of Riga’s development

The award received is a significant confirmation of Riga’s purposeful progress towards a sustainable, people-friendly and modern urban environment. It strengthens Riga’s position among European cities as an innovative and forward-looking metropolis. Riga’s achievements also serve as an inspiration to other cities, demonstrating that by combining public engagement, creative solutions and a strategic approach, it is possible to achieve substantial improvements in urban mobility and quality of life.

Accepting the award, Head of the Riga City Council Transport Committee Marta Kotello said: “I know that our entry this year will be even more powerful because we are now actively working to make Riga a more community-friendly city. This year, Riga will see a record number of small improvements that will make a great difference. We are building many more new pedestrian crossings, there will be new bike lanes in the city centre and new bicycle infrastructure in our neighbourhoods, along with new safe school zones near education buildings.”
