5G4LIVES – System Development for the Protection of Life and the Environment
Status: Ongoing projects

Riga, together with the municipality of Turin, is testing and implementing automated drone technology to improve public safety. The latest 5G technologies introduced in the project allow Riga municipal Police to conduct automated drone flights, thus improving public order and emergency response.
The Significance of the Project for Riga
Public safety and environmental protection are important aspects of urban development. Currently, Riga municipal Police already use drones, but their activities are limited – they require manual control and have short operating hours. The deployment of automated drones will allow patrolling larger areas, responding swiftly to violations and ensuring more effective monitoring.
Target of the Project
Implement and test automated drones to improve public and environmental safety, ensuring improved Riga municipal police response capacity and more efficient patrol.
Benefits for Residents
✔ Safer public bathing areas and bodies of water;
✔ Prompt response to accidents and irregularities;
✔ Less manual work for the police, increasing efficiency;
✔ Improved environmental monitoring and pollution control.
Project Activities
✔ Development of 5G infrastructure in project test areas;
✔ Testing and adaptation of automated drones for urban use;
✔ Training of Police officers to deal with new technologies;
✔ Data analysis and technology impact assessment.
Testbed Territory in Riga
Vecāķu and Ķīšezera beaches – places where automated drones will provide improved safety and patrol.
