CommitClimate – A Climate Neutrality Planning Tool for Municipalities in the Baltic Sea Region

CommitClimate is an international project that helps municipalities reduce carbon emissions and develop sustainable energy solutions. The digital planning and analysis tool developed within the project allows local governments to forecast energy consumption trends, assess emission reduction potential, and design effective strategies to achieve climate neutrality.

The Significance of the Project for Riga

Riga faces challenges related to energy use, carbon emissions, and climate change. To meet its climate neutrality goals, the city needs effective tools for data-driven decision-making. The project provides Riga with an innovative digital platform to model different development scenarios, evaluate energy policies, and plan effective carbon reduction measures.

Target of the Project

To develop and implement a digital modelling tool that enables municipalities to plan climate neutrality measures, assess emission reduction options, and make evidence-based decisions.

Benefits for Residents

✔ Cleaner air – reduced pollution improves public health and quality of life;
✔ More efficient energy use – supports energy savings and cost reductions;
✔ A sustainable future – environmentally friendly solutions for future generations;
✔ Resident engagement – opportunities for residents to take part in urban planning and share ideas.

Project Activities

✔ Digital planning tool development – an online platform where municipalities can input data on energy use and carbon emissions to model future scenarios;
✔ Training and outreach – educating local government staff and residents about planning and implementing sustainable strategies;
✔ Scenario analysis – assessing solutions such as electric vehicle integration and the use of renewable energy sources;
✔ International cooperation – exchanging best practices with partners across Europe.

Project Results

✔ Improved planning capacity – Riga gains a tool to support precise planning for climate targets;
✔ Reduced emissions – detailed action plans are created to help lower citywide carbon emissions;
✔ Public involvement – an interactive platform enables residents to follow and contribute to climate neutrality strategies;
✔ Cleaner and safer environment – reduced air pollution and improved urban quality of life.
