Implementation of Innovative Data Collection Technologies for Geospatial Data Acquisition
Status: Noslēgušies projekti

The project provides Riga Municipality with a modern handheld SLAM laser scanner that enables fast and accurate collection of three-dimensional (3D) data about the urban environment, significantly improving mapping and planning processes.
The Significance of the Project for Riga
The Urban Development Department of Riga Municipality maintains and updates geospatial information – data about territories, buildings, terrain, and infrastructure. Previously, surveying large areas using traditional equipment required considerable time and direct access to each object.
Introducing this technology allows the city to:
✓ collect data faster;
✓ reduce the risk of errors;
✓ ensure higher accuracy in construction and urban planning;
✓ more efficiently maintain the city’s digital twin – Riga’s 3D model.
Target of the Project
To acquire a handheld SLAM laser scanner with software in order to improve geospatial data acquisition and terrain mapping.
Benefits for Residents
✓ More accurate data means fewer errors in project design and lower reconstruction costs;
✓ Higher-quality urban planning.
Using modern technologies in city management ensures that decisions are made based on up-to-date and accurate data.
Project Activities
✓ Procurement process for the SLAM laser scanner organized;
✓ Acquisition of a handheld SLAM laser scanner and data processing software;
✓ Integration of the technology into daily work processes.
Project Results
✓ A modern geospatial data acquisition device – a handheld SLAM laser scanner – has been acquired;
✓ Possibility to obtain high-precision 3D point cloud data;
✓ Reduced time required for surveying large areas;
✓ Improved quality of 3D models for urban planning needs;
✓ Strengthened municipal capacity for implementing innovative technologies.
The equipment is already used in daily work, and staff training will ensure its full and effective use.
