Road Surface and Driving Conditions Monitoring

The project involves the installation of road surface sensors that provide real-time data on pavement conditions (dry, damp, wet, snow, or ice). This enables timely cleaning and treatment of roads with de-icing agents, improving traffic safety and reducing congestion.

The Significance of the Project for Riga

During winter, several access ramps in Riga frequently experience hazardous driving conditions such as black ice or compacted snow. In these areas, traffic is often affected not only by weather but also by heavy vehicle flow, making driving on inclines more difficult and leading to traffic jams. These challenges significantly impact public transport operations and hinder winter road maintenance efficiency.

Target of the Project

The project aims to establish a road surface monitoring system that provides real-time data on driving conditions in critical locations, enabling timely maintenance actions to ensure safe and continuous traffic flow.

Benefits for Residents

✔ Timely cleaning and treatment of roads during winter conditions
✔ Reduced risk of accidents and traffic congestion
✔ Safer and more reliable public transport movement

Project Activities

✔ Installation and calibration of road surface sensors
✔ Programming and data integration into the IoT platform
✔ System testing in cooperation with involved institutions

Project Implementation Area

Access ramp from Kārļa Ulmaņa Avenue to Jūrkalnes Street and access ramp from Slāvu Circle and Slāvu Bridge

Project Results

✔ Continuous monitoring of driving conditions
✔ Reduced number of traffic jams and accidents in high-risk areas
✔ Improved road safety during the winter season
✔ Enhanced efficiency of winter maintenance operations
